Troubleshooting Problems Opening GGB Files
Issues Opening GGB Files
GeoGebra is Not Installed
Double-clicking your GGB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open GGB File". When this happens, it is commonly due to GeoGebra missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the GGB file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your GGB, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of GeoGebra is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of GeoGebra won't support your GeoGebra Document file. Installing the latest version of GeoGebra from Markus Hohenwarter is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your GeoGebra Document file was created by a different (newer) version of GeoGebra than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your GGB file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening GGB files are due to having the wrong version of GeoGebra installed.
Additional GGB Opening Issues
Errors opening GeoGebra Document files can still occur even with the latest GeoGebra software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening GGB files. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for GGB are wrong
- The GGB file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Partial installation of GeoGebra that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your GGB file
- Your GGB is infected with malware
- Hardware related to GGBs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the GeoGebra Document format
