Understanding HBC Issues
Issues Opening HBC Files
SQL HyperBac Removed
You attempt to load your HBC file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The HBC File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have SQL HyperBac for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the HBC file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another HBC application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Outdated SQL HyperBac
In other instances, your HyperBac Compressed Archive file version may not be supported by your version of SQL HyperBac. Download the latest SQL HyperBac version from the Redgate Software website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your HyperBac Compressed Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of SQL HyperBac than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your HBC, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening HBC files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening HBCs
Although you might already have SQL HyperBac or another HBC-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening HyperBac Compressed Archive files. If you're still experiencing problems opening HBC files, there could be other computer problems. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- HBC file type Registry entries are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the HBC file inside the Windows Registry
- SQL HyperBac or another HBC application experienced a flawed installation
- HBC file corruption
- Your HBC is infected with malware
- Device drivers for HBC-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your HyperBac Compressed Archive file
