Issues Opening PCL Files
PCLTool Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PCL Files" when trying to open your PCL. Usually, this is because you do not have PCLTool for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PCL file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
PCLTool Requires Update
It is possible that your version of PCLTool isn't able to open your Printer Command Language Document file due to incompatibility. Download the latest PCLTool version from the Page Technology Marketing, Inc website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Printer Command Language Document file was created by a newer version of PCLTool than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your PCL file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening PCL files are due to having the incorrect version of PCLTool installed on your computer.
Other Causes of PCL File Opening Problems
Assuming you have the right PCLTool version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PCL files. Other PCL opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for PCL are wrong
- Corruption of the PCL file description inside the Registry
- Invalid installation of a PCL-associated program (eg. PCLTool)
- Something has caused file corruption of your PCL
- Past or present virus infection has affected your PCL
