Close Sessions of other Users

Click here if yours is the only active session.

Overview

Windows 10 supports multiple user sessions. To understand how multiple user sessions work, consider two users who share a computer. The first user who is currently working needs to temporarily leave the workstation. Using the Windows 10 lock feature, the user can lock the computer by pressing the Windows + L keys and move out. The lock feature will lock the computer screen but will keep all the running programs and open files as it is. The user can later come, enter the login password, and resume work. If the second user in between needs to use the computer, she can login with her own password and perform her work.

While multiple user sessions and Windows locking feature are valuable, they tend to adversely affect the computer's performance. This happens because if multiple user sessions simultaneously exist, more memory and processing power gets used to keep the programs of each user session running. As a solution, you can close all other user sessions except yours.

WARNING: When you close another user's session, the user will lose any unsaved data and any running programs might exit in an invalid state. Therefore, always try to notify users before closing their sessions.

Summary

Performance loss because of multiple running user sessions is common in office computers shared by coworkers and even in home computers shared by family members. So whenever you work on a computer where multiple user sessions are currently active and you face performance loss that hampers your work, consider closing all the user sessions except yours.
