VIS Troubleshooting
Issues Opening VIS Files
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 is Not Installed
When trying to open your VIS file, you get the error "Can't Open VIS File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your VIS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your VIS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visibility Image File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Visibility Image File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your VIS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 version on your computer can cause problems opening VIS files.
Additional VIS Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 installed, you can still experience difficulties opening VISs. Other VIS opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for VIS
- Accidental deletion of the description of the VIS file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 that did not fully complete
- Your VIS file is corrupted (issues with your Visibility Image File file itself)
- Your VIS is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your VIS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Visibility Image File files
