EXR Troubleshooting
Common EXR Opening Problems
Adobe Photoshop is Not Installed
When trying to open your EXR file, you get the error "Can't Open EXR File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Adobe Photoshop isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another EXR-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Adobe Photoshop is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe Photoshop won't support your OpenEXR Image file. If you do not have the proper version Adobe Photoshop (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a OpenEXR Image file version that was created by a newer version of Adobe Photoshop than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the EXR file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening EXR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading EXR Files
Assuming you have the right Adobe Photoshop version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening EXR files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening EXRs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- EXR file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the EXR file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of Adobe Photoshop or other EXR-related program
- Your EXR file is corrupted (issues with your OpenEXR Image file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your EXR
- EXR-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows cannot load your OpenEXR Image file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
