Sources of EL Problems

Typical EL Opening Challenges

GNU Emacs Removed

If you attempt to load your EL file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open EL Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have GNU Emacs for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your EL with GNU Emacs, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have GNU Emacs installed, and you know of another program to open your EL file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of GNU Emacs is Installed

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of GNU Emacs installed that's incompatible with your Emacs Lisp Code File type. You will need to download a newer version of GNU Emacs if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your EL file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening EL files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other EL File Opening Causes

Errors opening Emacs Lisp Code File files can still occur even with the latest GNU Emacs software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ELs. Additional factors include:

  • Invalid EL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Corruption of the EL file description inside the Registry
  • Corrupt install of GNU Emacs or other EL-related program
  • File corruption affecting your EL file
  • Malware-tainted EL file can't be opened
  • EL-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Emacs Lisp Code File file
