261 File Complications
Troubles Opening 261 Files
VLC Media Player Isn't There
Double-clicking your 261 file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open 261 File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because VLC Media Player isn't installed on your PC. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the 261 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your 261, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Incorrect VLC Media Player Version
It is possible that your version of VLC Media Player isn't able to open your H.261 Encoded Video file due to incompatibility. Download the latest VLC Media Player version from the VideoLAN website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your H.261 Encoded Video file was created by a newer VLC Media Player than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 261 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening 261 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening 261s
Even with the correct version of VLC Media Player installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 261s. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 261s. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry 261 file paths that are incorrect
- Unintentional removal of the description of the 261 file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of VLC Media Player or other 261-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your 261
- Malware-tainted 261 file can't be opened
- Hardware related to 261s has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open H.261 Encoded Video files
