Sources of CDR Problems
Common CDR Opening Problems
Adobe Illustrator CC Isn't There
When you double-click your CDR file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe Illustrator CC for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the CDR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Adobe Illustrator CC installed, and you know of another program to open your CDR file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Adobe Illustrator CC Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed that's incompatible with your CorelDRAW Vector Image File type. You will need to download a newer version of Adobe Illustrator CC if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a CorelDRAW Vector Image File file version that was created by a newer version of Adobe Illustrator CC than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your CDR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening CDR files are due to having the wrong version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed.
Other Causes of CDR File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Adobe Illustrator CC installed, you can still experience difficulties opening CDRs. If you are still having problems opening CDR files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- CDR file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the CDR file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Adobe Illustrator CC that did not fully complete
- Your CDR file is corrupted (issues with your CorelDRAW Vector Image File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your CDR
- CDR-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your CorelDRAW Vector Image File file successfully
