Troubleshoot VLT Files
Common VLT Opening Problems
WinVault Isn't There
Double-clicking your VLT file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open VLT File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have WinVault for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another VLT-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Obsolete Version of WinVault
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a WinVault File Archive file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version WinVault (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your WinVault File Archive file was created by a different (newer) version of WinVault than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your VLT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right WinVault version on your computer can cause problems opening VLT files.
Other Causes of VLT File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening VLT files even with the latest version of WinVault installed on your PC. If you are still having problems opening VLT files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- File references in the Windows Registry for VLT are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the VLT file inside the Windows Registry
- Corrupt install of WinVault or other VLT-related program
- File corruption affecting your VLT file
- Your VLT has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with VLT has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open WinVault File Archive files
