Troubleshoot ZAB Files

Issues Opening ZAB Files

Missing VLC Media Player

When you double-click your ZAB file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to VLC Media Player missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your ZAB, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

VLC Media Player Requires Update

Sometimes your installed version of VLC Media Player won't support your Zipped Audio Book file. Download the latest VLC Media Player version from the VideoLAN website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Zipped Audio Book file was created by a newer version of VLC Media Player than you have on your PC.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ZAB file and clicking "Properties".

Primarily, problems experienced when opening ZAB files are due to having the incorrect version of VLC Media Player installed on your computer.

Other ZAB File Issues

Even with the correct version of VLC Media Player installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ZABs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening ZAB files. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • ZAB file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Corruption of the ZAB file description inside the Registry
  • Defective install of a ZAB program, such as VLC Media Player
  • Something has caused file corruption of your ZAB
  • Your ZAB has adversely impacted by malware
  • ZAB-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Zipped Audio Book files
