Understanding 256 Issues
Frequent 256 Opening Issues
Interplay Descent 2 Removed
When you double-click your 256 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Interplay Descent 2 for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your 256 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another 256 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Interplay Descent 2 Requires Update
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Interplay Descent 2 installed that's incompatible with your Descent 2 Color Palette File type. Download the latest Interplay Descent 2 version from the Interplay Entertainment website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your Descent 2 Color Palette File file was probably created by a newer release of Interplay Descent 2 than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 256 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Interplay Descent 2 version on your computer can cause problems opening 256 files.
Associated Difficulties Loading 256 Files
Even with the correct version of Interplay Descent 2 installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 256s. If you're still experiencing problems opening 256 files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for 256 are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the 256 file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Interplay Descent 2 that did not fully complete
- Your 256 file is corrupted (issues with your Descent 2 Color Palette File file itself)
- 256 file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to 256s has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Descent 2 Color Palette File format
