The ACX File Extension has three different file types (mostly seen as the Atari ST Program format) and can be opened with three distinctive software programs, with the dominant related application developed by Open Source (Gemulator software). The majority of ACX files are considered Game Files, but they can also be Data Files.

Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. These files have a Popularity Rating of "Low", meaning they are not very commonly observed on your average hard disk.

Please see the detailed information below to learn more about ACX files and the programs that can open them. In addition, we provide simple troubleshooting information to help you open your ACX file.

Troubleshoot ACX Files

Issues Opening ACX Files

Gemulator Removed

When you double-click your ACX file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Gemulator isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your ACX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your ACX, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Gemulator Requires Update

Sometimes your installed version of Gemulator won't support your Atari ST Program file. If you've got the wrong version of Gemulator installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.

Tip: If you right-click on your ACX file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ACX files are due to having the wrong version of Gemulator installed.

Other ACX File Issues

Even with the correct version of Gemulator installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ACXs. If you are still having problems opening ACX files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:

  • ACX file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • The ACX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Gemulator or another ACX application experienced a flawed installation
  • The ACX itself is corrupted
  • The ACX is infected with a virus
  • ACX-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Atari ST Program file successfully

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
