Troubleshooting Problems Opening HIP Files
Issues Opening HIP Files
Side Effects Houdini Not Present
When trying to open your HIP file, you get the error "Can't Open HIP File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Side Effects Houdini isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your HIP with Side Effects Houdini, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another HIP application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Side Effects Houdini Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Houdini Project File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Side Effects Houdini version from the SideFX website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Houdini Project File file was created by a newer Side Effects Houdini than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your HIP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening HIP files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading HIP Files
You can still experience errors opening HIP files even with the latest version of Side Effects Houdini installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening HIPs. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for HIP
- The HIP file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Corrupt install of Side Effects Houdini or other HIP-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your HIP
- The HIP is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for HIP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Houdini Project File format
