HR File Complications

Typical HR Opening Challenges

Recoil Isn't There

You attempt to load your HR file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The HR File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Recoil missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your HR with Recoil, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HR, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Wrong Version of Recoil is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Atari Picture Image File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Recoil (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Atari Picture Image File file version that was created by a newer version of Recoil than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your HR file and clicking "Properties".

Summary: Not having the right Recoil version on your computer can cause problems opening HR files.

Other HR File Issues

Assuming you have the right Recoil version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening HR files. If you are still having problems opening HR files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for HR are wrong
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry HR description
  • Invalid installation of a HR-associated program (eg. Recoil)
  • File corruption affecting your HR file
  • Your HR is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your HR file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your Atari Picture Image File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
