NEO Troubleshooting

Issues Opening NEO Files

Recoil is Not Installed

You attempt to load your NEO file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The NEO File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Recoil for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your NEO with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you don't have Recoil installed, and you know of another program to open your NEO file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Recoil is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Recoil isn't able to open your NeoChrome Bitmap Image file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of Recoil from Piotr Fusik is recommended. Your NeoChrome Bitmap Image file was probably created by a newer release of Recoil than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your NEO, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening NEO files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening NEOs

Errors opening NeoChrome Bitmap Image files can still occur even with the latest Recoil software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening NEO files. Other contributing causes:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for NEO
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the NEO file inside the Windows Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the NEO format
  • NEO file corruption
  • Malware-tainted NEO file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your NEO file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the NeoChrome Bitmap Image format

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
