PI4 Troubleshooting

Issues Opening PI4 Files

Degas Isn't There

If you attempt to load your PI4 file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open PI4 Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Degas isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your PI4 file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another PI4-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Degas Requires Update

Your DEGAS Image file is incompatible with Degas because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Tom Hudson website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Degas. The primary cause of this problem is that your DEGAS Image file was created by a different (newer) version of Degas than what's installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your PI4 file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening PI4 files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Other PI4 File Opening Causes

You can still experience errors opening PI4 files even with the latest version of Degas installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening PI4 files. These issues include:

  • PI4 file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Deletion of the PI4 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of Degas or other PI4-related program
  • The PI4 itself is corrupted
  • PI4 file integrity has been compromised by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PI4 file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your DEGAS Image file successfully
