Sources of PI6 Problems

Frequent PI6 Opening Issues

Degas is Not Installed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open PI6 Files" when trying to open your PI6. Customarily, this means that Degas is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your PI6 file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Obsolete Version of Degas

It is possible that your version of Degas isn't able to open your DEGAS Bitmap Image File file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Degas version from the Tom Hudson website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your DEGAS Bitmap Image File file was probably created by a newer release of Degas than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Investigate your PI6 file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Regardless, most of the PI6 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Degas installed.

Other PI6 File Opening Causes

Even with the correct version of Degas installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PI6s. If you are still having problems opening PI6 files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Additional factors include:

  • PI6 file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the PI6 file inside the Windows Registry
  • Corrupt install of Degas or other PI6-related program
  • Something has caused file corruption of your PI6
  • Your PI6 has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware associated with PI6 has outdated drivers
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the DEGAS Bitmap Image File format
