Understanding SPK Issues
Troubles Opening SPK Files
Deer Hunter is Not Installed
Double-clicking your SPK file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open SPK File". Usually, this is because you do not have Deer Hunter for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your SPK, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Deer Hunter
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Deer Hunter installed that's incompatible with your Deer Hunter Map File type. If you do not have the proper version Deer Hunter (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is predominately due to having a Deer Hunter Map File file version that was created by a newer version of Deer Hunter than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the SPK file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening SPK files are due to having the incorrect version of Deer Hunter installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading SPK Files
You can still experience errors opening SPK files even with the latest version of Deer Hunter installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening SPKs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- SPK file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry SPK description
- Deer Hunter or another SPK application experienced a flawed installation
- Your SPK file is corrupted (issues with your Deer Hunter Map File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your SPK
- Hardware associated with SPK has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Deer Hunter Map File file
