Troubleshooting Problems Opening 51 Files
Common 51 Opening Problems
Pro/ENGINEER Isn't There
You attempt to load your 51 file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The 51 File Extension". Customarily, this means that Pro/ENGINEER is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the 51 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another 51 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of Pro/ENGINEER is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Pro/ENGINEER won't support your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file. If you do not have the proper version Pro/ENGINEER (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was probably created by a newer release of Pro/ENGINEER than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the 51 file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening 51 files are due to having the incorrect version of Pro/ENGINEER installed on your computer.
Other Causes of 51 File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Pro/ENGINEER installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 51s. If you are still having problems opening 51 files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for 51 are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the 51 file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the 51 format
- Your 51 file is corrupted (issues with your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file itself)
- Your 51 is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your 51 file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
