Troubleshoot 56 Files
Troubles Opening 56 Files
Pro/ENGINEER Removed
You attempt to load your 56 file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The 56 File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Pro/ENGINEER isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your 56 with Pro/ENGINEER, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens 56 files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Pro/ENGINEER is Out-of-Date
In other instances, your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file version may not be supported by your version of Pro/ENGINEER. Download the latest Pro/ENGINEER version from the PTC website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was created by a newer Pro/ENGINEER than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 56 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening 56 files are due to having the wrong version of Pro/ENGINEER installed.
Other 56 File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Pro/ENGINEER installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 56s. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 56s. Other contributing causes:
- Windows Registry 56 file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the 56 file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Pro/ENGINEER that did not fully complete
- The 56 itself is corrupted
- Malware-tainted 56 file can't be opened
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your 56 file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file
