Troubleshooting Problems Opening 64 Files

Common Problems Opening 64 Files

Pro/ENGINEER Isn't There

When you double-click your 64 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Pro/ENGINEER is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your 64 with Pro/ENGINEER, so double-clicking the file won't work.

Tip: If you don't have Pro/ENGINEER installed, and you know of another program to open your 64 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Pro/ENGINEER is Out-of-Date

Your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file is incompatible with Pro/ENGINEER because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Pro/ENGINEER if you don't have the right version. Your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was probably created by a newer release of Pro/ENGINEER than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your 64, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening 64 files are due to having the wrong version of Pro/ENGINEER installed.

Other 64 File Issues

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Pro/ENGINEER will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading 64 files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for 64
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the 64 file in the Windows registry
  • Corrupt install of Pro/ENGINEER or other 64-related program
  • 64 file corruption
  • Your 64 is infected with malware
  • Device drivers for 64-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file
