72 Troubleshooting

Issues Opening 72 Files

Pro/ENGINEER Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open 72 Files" when trying to open your 72. When this happens, it is commonly due to Pro/ENGINEER missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the 72 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another 72 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Obsolete Version of Pro/ENGINEER

In other instances, your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file version may not be supported by your version of Pro/ENGINEER. Installing the latest version of Pro/ENGINEER from PTC is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was created by a different (newer) version of Pro/ENGINEER than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 72 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the 72 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Pro/ENGINEER installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening 72s

Even with the correct version of Pro/ENGINEER installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 72s. If you are continuing to have errors with loading 72 files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • 72 file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Deletion of the 72 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of Pro/ENGINEER or other 72-related program
  • Your 72 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted 72 file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for 72-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data format
