Sources of 78 Problems

Troubles Opening 78 Files

Pro/ENGINEER Removed

When you double-click your 78 file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Pro/ENGINEER for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your 78 because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens 78 files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Pro/ENGINEER Requires Update

Your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file is incompatible with Pro/ENGINEER because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the PTC website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Pro/ENGINEER. Your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was probably created by a newer release of Pro/ENGINEER than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 78 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right Pro/ENGINEER version on your computer can cause problems opening 78 files.

Other 78 File Opening Causes

Errors opening Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data files can still occur even with the latest Pro/ENGINEER software installed on your computer. Other 78 opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Invalid 78 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Deletion of the 78 file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Corrupt install of Pro/ENGINEER or other 78-related program
  • Your 78 can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Your 78 is infected with malware
  • 78-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
  • Windows cannot load your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
