Troubleshoot 79 Files
Frequent 79 Opening Issues
Pro/ENGINEER Removed
Double-clicking your 79 file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open 79 File". Customarily, this means that Pro/ENGINEER is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your 79 with Pro/ENGINEER, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another 79-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Pro/ENGINEER is Installed
In other instances, your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file version may not be supported by your version of Pro/ENGINEER. Installing the latest version of Pro/ENGINEER from PTC is recommended. Most of the time your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was created by a newer Pro/ENGINEER than what you have installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the 79 file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the 79 file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Pro/ENGINEER installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening 79s
Although you might already have Pro/ENGINEER or another 79-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading 79 files, other external issues might be to blame. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid 79 file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the 79 file inside the Windows Registry
- Pro/ENGINEER or another 79 application experienced a flawed installation
- Your 79 file is corrupted (issues with your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file itself)
- Malware-tainted 79 file can't be opened
- Hardware associated with 79 has outdated drivers
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data format
