Troubleshooting Problems Opening 83 Files
Typical 83 Opening Challenges
Pro/ENGINEER Isn't There
If you attempt to load your 83 file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open 83 Files". Customarily, this means that Pro/ENGINEER is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your 83 file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your 83 file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Pro/ENGINEER Version
It is possible that your version of Pro/ENGINEER isn't able to open your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file due to incompatibility. Visit the PTC website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Pro/ENGINEER. The primary cause of this problem is that your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was created by a different (newer) version of Pro/ENGINEER than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of 83 file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of 83 file opening issues are due to not having the correct Pro/ENGINEER version installed.
Additional 83 Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Pro/ENGINEER installed, you can still experience difficulties opening 83s. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening 83 files. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for 83 are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the 83 file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Pro/ENGINEER or other 83-related program
- The 83 itself is corrupted
- Your 83 is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your 83 file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file
