98 Troubleshooting

Frequent 98 Opening Issues

Pro/ENGINEER Removed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open 98 Files" when trying to open your 98. Customarily, this means that Pro/ENGINEER is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the 98 file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another 98 application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Pro/ENGINEER Requires Update

Your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file is incompatible with Pro/ENGINEER because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Pro/ENGINEER version from the PTC website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data file was created by a newer Pro/ENGINEER than what you have installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the 98 file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Pro/ENGINEER version on your computer can cause problems opening 98 files.

More Causes of Problems Opening 98s

Although you might already have Pro/ENGINEER or another 98-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening 98s. Problems unrelated to software:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for 98 are wrong
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the 98 file inside the Windows Registry
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the 98 format
  • 98 file corruption
  • Your 98 has adversely impacted by malware
  • Hardware related to 98s has device driver corruption
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Creo Elements/Pro Versioned Data format
