Troubleshoot AFR Files

Common Problems Opening AFR Files

FreeBSD Removed

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open AFR Files" when trying to open your AFR. Usually, this is because you do not have FreeBSD for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the AFR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: Another AFR-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Outdated FreeBSD

Sometimes your installed version of FreeBSD won't support your FreeBSD File file. If you've got the wrong version of FreeBSD installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your FreeBSD File file was created by a different (newer) version of FreeBSD than what's installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the AFR file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening AFR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Additional AFR Opening Issues

Even with the correct version of FreeBSD installed, you can still experience difficulties opening AFRs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening AFR files. These issues include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for AFR
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the AFR file in the Windows registry
  • Defective install of a AFR program, such as FreeBSD
  • The AFR itself is corrupted
  • Malware-tainted AFR file can't be opened
  • Hardware associated with AFR has outdated drivers
  • Windows cannot load your FreeBSD File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
