Troubleshoot BEX Files

Typical BEX Opening Challenges

Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) Removed

When trying to open your BEX file, you get the error "Can't Open BEX File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your BEX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another BEX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) is Out-of-Date

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a PGP Binary Extracted Public Key file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you've got the wrong version of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Your PGP Binary Extracted Public Key file was probably created by a newer release of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: Right-clicking on your BEX, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: Not having the right Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) version on your computer can cause problems opening BEX files.

Other BEX File Issues

Although you might already have Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) or another BEX-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening PGP Binary Extracted Public Key files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening BEXs. These issues include:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for BEX
  • The BEX file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Invalid installation of a BEX-associated program (eg. Pretty Good Privacy (PGP))
  • BEX file corruption
  • The BEX is infected with a virus
  • Drivers associated with BEX software need to be updated
  • Windows cannot load your PGP Binary Extracted Public Key file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
