Sources of DKS Problems
Typical DKS Opening Challenges
DataKeeper Not Present
You attempt to load your DKS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The DKS File Extension". Customarily, this means that DataKeeper is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your DKS because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your DKS, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
DataKeeper Requires Update
It is possible that your version of DataKeeper isn't able to open your DataKeeper Configuration File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version DataKeeper (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your DataKeeper Configuration File file was created by a newer DataKeeper than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your DKS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening DKS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other DKS File Issues
You can still experience errors opening DKS files even with the latest version of DataKeeper installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DKSs. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid DKS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the DKS file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a DKS-associated program (eg. DataKeeper)
- Your DKS can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your DKS has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your DKS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your DataKeeper Configuration File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
