Sources of GHT Problems
Frequent GHT Opening Issues
Norton Ghost Isn't There
Double-clicking your GHT file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open GHT File". If so, it typically means that you don't have Norton Ghost installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your GHT because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your GHT, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Norton Ghost is Installed
It is possible that your version of Norton Ghost isn't able to open your Norton Ghost Project file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Norton Ghost (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Norton Ghost Project file was created by a newer version of Norton Ghost than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your GHT file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening GHT files are due to having the wrong version of Norton Ghost installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading GHT Files
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Norton Ghost will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening GHTs. Other contributing causes:
- Invalid GHT file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the GHT file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the GHT format
- Your GHT file is corrupted (issues with your Norton Ghost Project file itself)
- GHT file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for GHT-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Norton Ghost Project file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
