Troubleshooting Problems Opening HCT Files
Frequent HCT Opening Issues
Norton Security Disappeared
When you double-click your HCT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Norton Security isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your HCT with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another HCT application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Norton Security Version
Sometimes your installed version of Norton Security won't support your Symantec LiveUpdate Data file. Download the latest Norton Security version from the Symantec Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Symantec LiveUpdate Data file version that was created by a newer version of Norton Security than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the HCT file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening HCT files are due to having the incorrect version of Norton Security installed on your computer.
Additional HCT Opening Issues
Assuming you have the right Norton Security version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening HCT files. If you are still having problems opening HCT files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- HCT file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Deletion of the HCT file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a HCT program, such as Norton Security
- Your HCT file is corrupted (issues with your Symantec LiveUpdate Data file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your HCT
- Hardware associated with HCT has outdated drivers
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Symantec LiveUpdate Data file
