IAD File Complications

Frequent IAD Opening Issues

Missing Symantec Patch Management

When you double-click your IAD file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Symantec Patch Management for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another IAD application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Symantec Patch Management is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Symantec Patch Management isn't able to open your Symantec Patch Management Data file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Symantec Patch Management if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Symantec Patch Management Data file version that was created by a newer version of Symantec Patch Management than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: If you right-click on your IAD file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Summary: Not having the right Symantec Patch Management version on your computer can cause problems opening IAD files.

Other Causes of IAD File Opening Problems

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Symantec Patch Management will resolve your issue. If you are continuing to have errors with loading IAD files, other external issues might be to blame. Other contributing causes:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for IAD are wrong
  • The IAD file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Invalid installation of a IAD-associated program (eg. Symantec Patch Management)
  • The IAD itself is corrupted
  • The IAD is infected with a virus
  • Hardware associated with IAD has outdated drivers
  • Windows cannot load your Symantec Patch Management Data file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
