Understanding LIVEUPDATE Issues
Common Problems Opening LIVEUPDATE Files
Norton SystemWorks is Not Installed
Double-clicking your LIVEUPDATE file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open LIVEUPDATE File". When this happens, it is commonly due to Norton SystemWorks missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your LIVEUPDATE file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your LIVEUPDATE, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Norton SystemWorks
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Norton SystemWorks installed that's incompatible with your Symantec LiveUpdate File type. You will need to download a newer version of Norton SystemWorks if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Symantec LiveUpdate File file was created by a newer Norton SystemWorks than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of LIVEUPDATE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of LIVEUPDATE file opening issues are due to not having the correct Norton SystemWorks version installed.
Additional LIVEUPDATE Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Norton SystemWorks installed, you can still experience difficulties opening LIVEUPDATEs. If you are continuing to have errors with loading LIVEUPDATE files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for LIVEUPDATE are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the LIVEUPDATE file inside the Windows Registry
- Norton SystemWorks or another LIVEUPDATE application experienced a flawed installation
- Your LIVEUPDATE file is corrupted (issues with your Symantec LiveUpdate File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your LIVEUPDATE
- Hardware related to LIVEUPDATEs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Symantec LiveUpdate File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
Quiz: Which of these is considered a vector image file?
That's Correct!
The unique thing about vector files such as AI and EPS is that graphic details (eg. sizes and shapes of objects) and text remains editable. This allows you can save and re-open them in Illustrator and edit text or other elements within the graphic.
