TMP File Complications
Frequent TMP Opening Issues
Internet Explorer Isn't There
When you double-click your TMP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Internet Explorer for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another TMP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Internet Explorer Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Internet Explorer won't support your General Temporary File file. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Internet Explorer. The primary cause of this problem is that your General Temporary File file was created by a different (newer) version of Internet Explorer than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your TMP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Internet Explorer version on your computer can cause problems opening TMP files.
More Causes of Problems Opening TMPs
Assuming you have the right Internet Explorer version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening TMP files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening TMPs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- TMP file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry TMP description
- Partial installation of Internet Explorer that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your TMP file
- The TMP is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with TMP has outdated drivers
- Windows cannot load your General Temporary File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
