VDB File Complications
Common Problems Opening VDB Files
Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 Removed
Double-clicking your VDB file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open VDB File". Usually, this is because you do not have Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the VDB file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens VDB files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Incorrect Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Symantec Virus Database File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. If you do not have the proper version Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Symantec Virus Database File file was created by a newer version of Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 than you have on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your VDB file and clicking "Properties".
Primarily, problems experienced when opening VDB files are due to having the incorrect version of Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 installed on your computer.
Additional VDB Opening Issues
Errors opening Symantec Virus Database File files can still occur even with the latest Symantec EndPoint Protection 12 software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening VDBs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- VDB file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the VDB file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a VDB program, such as Symantec EndPoint Protection 12
- Something has caused file corruption of your VDB
- Your VDB has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware related to VDBs has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Symantec Virus Database File files
