Sources of AET Problems
Common AET Opening Problems
Missing Adobe After Effects
If you attempt to load your AET file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open AET Files". Customarily, this means that Adobe After Effects is not installed on %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your AET with Adobe After Effects, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Adobe After Effects installed, and you know of another program to open your AET file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Adobe After Effects is Installed
Your After Effects Project Template file is incompatible with Adobe After Effects because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Adobe After Effects installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your After Effects Project Template file was created by a newer version of Adobe After Effects than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your AET file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Adobe After Effects version on your computer can cause problems opening AET files.
Other Causes of AET File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Adobe After Effects installed, you can still experience difficulties opening AETs. Other AET opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for AET
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry AET description
- Corrupt install of Adobe After Effects or other AET-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your AET
- Malware-tainted AET file can't be opened
- Drivers associated with AET software need to be updated
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the After Effects Project Template file
