Troubleshoot AETX Files
Issues Opening AETX Files
Adobe After Effects is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open AETX Files" when trying to open your AETX. Customarily, this means that Adobe After Effects is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your AETX file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Incorrect Adobe After Effects Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a After Effects XML Project Template file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Adobe After Effects. Your After Effects XML Project Template file was probably created by a newer release of Adobe After Effects than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the AETX file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening AETX files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional AETX Opening Issues
Errors opening After Effects XML Project Template files can still occur even with the latest Adobe After Effects software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading AETX files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- AETX file type Registry entries are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry AETX description
- Invalid installation of a AETX-associated program (eg. Adobe After Effects)
- File corruption affecting your AETX file
- AETX file integrity has been compromised by malware
- AETX-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open After Effects XML Project Template files
