Troubleshooting Problems Opening AMS Files

Frequent AMS Opening Issues

Adobe Photoshop CC Removed

You attempt to load your AMS file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The AMS File Extension". Customarily, this means that Adobe Photoshop CC is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your AMS because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you don't have Adobe Photoshop CC installed, and you know of another program to open your AMS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Obsolete Version of Adobe Photoshop CC

Sometimes your installed version of Adobe Photoshop CC won't support your Adobe Monitor Setup File file. You will need to download a newer version of Adobe Photoshop CC if you don't have the right version. Your Adobe Monitor Setup File file was probably created by a newer release of Adobe Photoshop CC than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: If you right-click on your AMS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Regardless, most of the AMS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Adobe Photoshop CC installed.

Other Causes of AMS File Opening Problems

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Adobe Photoshop CC will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening AMS files. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Invalid AMS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • The AMS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Adobe Photoshop CC or another AMS application experienced a flawed installation
  • AMS file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your AMS
  • Hardware associated with AMS has outdated drivers
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Adobe Monitor Setup File format
