PRE Troubleshooting
Issues Opening PRE Files
Microsoft PowerPoint Isn't There
You attempt to load your PRE file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The PRE File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft PowerPoint missing in %%os%%. Your operating system cannot associate your PRE with Microsoft PowerPoint, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: Another PRE-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Wrong Version of Microsoft PowerPoint is Installed
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Lotus Freelance Graphics File file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft PowerPoint if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Lotus Freelance Graphics File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft PowerPoint than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the PRE file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the PRE file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft PowerPoint installed.
Other Causes of PRE File Opening Problems
Assuming you have the right Microsoft PowerPoint version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening PRE files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening PREs. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for PRE are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the PRE file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a PRE-associated program (eg. Microsoft PowerPoint)
- The PRE itself is corrupted
- Your PRE is infected with malware
- Hardware related to PREs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Lotus Freelance Graphics File file successfully
