Understanding BK Issues
Frequent BK Opening Issues
Missing Adobe FrameMaker
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open BK Files" when trying to open your BK. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe FrameMaker for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the BK file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another BK application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Adobe FrameMaker is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Adobe FrameMaker isn't able to open your FrameMaker Book File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Adobe FrameMaker (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your BK, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening BK files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other BK File Issues
Errors opening FrameMaker Book File files can still occur even with the latest Adobe FrameMaker software installed on your computer. If you're still experiencing problems opening BK files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:
- File references in the Windows Registry for BK are wrong
- Corruption of the BK file description inside the Registry
- Corrupt install of Adobe FrameMaker or other BK-related program
- Your BK file is corrupted (issues with your FrameMaker Book File file itself)
- BK file integrity has been compromised by malware
- BK-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the FrameMaker Book File file
