Troubleshooting Problems Opening NSF Files

Common NSF Opening Problems

DeliPlayer Not Present

Double-clicking your NSF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open NSF File". If so, it typically means that you don't have DeliPlayer installed for %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your NSF file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: If you don't have DeliPlayer installed, and you know of another program to open your NSF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

DeliPlayer Requires Update

It is possible that your version of DeliPlayer isn't able to open your NES Sound Format File file due to incompatibility. Installing the latest version of DeliPlayer from Open Source is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your NES Sound Format File file was created by a newer version of DeliPlayer than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the NSF file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right DeliPlayer version on your computer can cause problems opening NSF files.

Other Causes of NSF File Opening Problems

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of DeliPlayer will resolve your issue. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening NSF files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for NSF
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry NSF description
  • Defective install of a NSF program, such as DeliPlayer
  • The NSF itself is corrupted
  • Your NSF has adversely impacted by malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your NSF file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your NES Sound Format File file
