CLX File Summary

Most CLX files can be viewed with nine known software applications, typically Rational XDE developed by IBM. It's main file type association is the Rational XDE format, but also includes three other rarely-seen file types. Although CLX files are traditionally categorized as Data Files, they can also be Encoded Files or Executable Files.

Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems can be used to view CLX files. Both desktop and mobile devices enable you to view and (sometimes) edit these files, depending on the software used. CLX files have a "Low" Popularity Rating; this means that they are not present on most devices.

Although there is a lot more to know about CLX files, those are the most important details of these types of files. If you are having trouble opening these files, or would like more detailed information, please see our comprehensive information below.

Sources of CLX Problems

Issues Opening CLX Files

Rational XDE Disappeared

When trying to open your CLX file, you get the error "Can't Open CLX File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Rational XDE for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your CLX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another CLX-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Wrong Version of Rational XDE is Installed

Sometimes your installed version of Rational XDE won't support your Rational XDE file. If you do not have the proper version Rational XDE (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your Rational XDE file was created by a newer version of Rational XDE than you have on your PC.

Tip: Investigate your CLX file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening CLX files are due to having the wrong version of Rational XDE installed.

Other CLX File Opening Causes

In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Rational XDE will resolve your issue. If you're still experiencing problems opening CLX files, there could be other computer problems. Other contributing causes:

  • Windows Registry CLX file paths that are incorrect
  • Corruption of the CLX file description inside the Registry
  • Partial installation of Rational XDE that did not fully complete
  • Your CLX can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted CLX file can't be opened
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your CLX file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Rational XDE file
