EDT Troubleshooting
Common EDT Opening Problems
Adobe Digital Editions Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open EDT Files" when trying to open your EDT. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Adobe Digital Editions isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your EDT with Adobe Digital Editions, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you don't have Adobe Digital Editions installed, and you know of another program to open your EDT file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Adobe Digital Editions is Out-of-Date
In other instances, your Adobe eBook Download Settings file version may not be supported by your version of Adobe Digital Editions. Download the latest Adobe Digital Editions version from the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Adobe eBook Download Settings file was created by a newer version of Adobe Digital Editions than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your EDT file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Conclusion: The majority of EDT file opening issues are due to not having the correct Adobe Digital Editions version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading EDT Files
Assuming you have the right Adobe Digital Editions version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening EDT files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening EDT files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for EDT are wrong
- The EDT file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a EDT-associated program (eg. Adobe Digital Editions)
- EDT file corruption
- EDT file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Drivers associated with EDT software need to be updated
- Windows cannot load your Adobe eBook Download Settings file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
