Understanding NS4 Issues
Issues Opening NS4 Files
IBM Lotus Notes Removed
Double-clicking your NS4 file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open NS4 File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because IBM Lotus Notes isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have IBM Lotus Notes installed, and you know of another program to open your NS4 file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of IBM Lotus Notes is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of IBM Lotus Notes won't support your Lotus Notes 4 Database file. If you do not have the proper version IBM Lotus Notes (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: If you right-click on your NS4 file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening NS4 files are due to having the incorrect version of IBM Lotus Notes installed on your computer.
Other Causes of NS4 File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening NS4 files even with the latest version of IBM Lotus Notes installed on your PC. Other NS4 opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Other contributing causes:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for NS4
- Deletion of the NS4 file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the NS4 format
- File corruption affecting your NS4 file
- Your NS4 is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with NS4 software need to be updated
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Lotus Notes 4 Database files
