Issues Opening FPK Files
Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 Removed
You attempt to load your FPK file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The FPK File Extension". Usually, this is because you do not have Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your FPK, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3
In other instances, your Civilization 4 Data File file version may not be supported by your version of Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3. Installing the latest version of Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 from Interscape is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Civilization 4 Data File file was created by a newer version of Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FPK file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 version on your computer can cause problems opening FPK files.
Additional FPK Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening FPK files even with the latest version of Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening FPK files. These issues include:
- Windows Registry FPK file paths that are incorrect
- The FPK file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Take-Two Interactive Civilization 3 or another FPK application experienced a flawed installation
- Your FPK can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- The FPK is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to FPKs has device driver corruption
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Civilization 4 Data File file
