HLM Troubleshooting
Typical HLM Opening Challenges
Adobe Authorware Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open HLM Files" when trying to open your HLM. When this happens, it is commonly due to Adobe Authorware missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your HLM with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another HLM application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Obsolete Version of Adobe Authorware
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Adobe Authorware installed that's incompatible with your Winhelp Vbhilfe File type. If you've got the wrong version of Adobe Authorware installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Winhelp Vbhilfe File file was created by a newer Adobe Authorware than what you have installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your HLM file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening HLM files are due to having the incorrect version of Adobe Authorware installed on your computer.
Other HLM File Issues
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Adobe Authorware will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening HLM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for HLM
- The HLM file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Corrupt install of Adobe Authorware or other HLM-related program
- Your HLM can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- HLM file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for HLM-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Winhelp Vbhilfe File file
