Sources of IDD Problems
Frequent IDD Opening Issues
Adobe InDesign is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your IDD file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open IDD Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe InDesign for %%os%% installed on your computer. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens IDD files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Wrong Version of Adobe InDesign is Installed
Sometimes your installed version of Adobe InDesign won't support your Adobe InDesign For Mac Document file. If you've got the wrong version of Adobe InDesign installed, you'll need to install the correct version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Adobe InDesign For Mac Document file was created by a different (newer) version of Adobe InDesign than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the IDD file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening IDD files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional IDD Opening Issues
Even with the correct version of Adobe InDesign installed, you can still experience difficulties opening IDDs. If you're still experiencing problems opening IDD files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- IDD file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the IDD file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a IDD-associated program (eg. Adobe InDesign)
- File corruption affecting your IDD file
- IDD file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Hardware related to IDDs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your Adobe InDesign For Mac Document file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
