Understanding MXP Issues

Issues Opening MXP Files

Adobe Extension Manager CC is Not Installed

You attempt to load your MXP file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The MXP File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Adobe Extension Manager CC missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the MXP file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: When another MXP application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Adobe Extension Manager CC is Out-of-Date

It is possible that your version of Adobe Extension Manager CC isn't able to open your Adobe Extension Package file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Adobe Extension Manager CC if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your Adobe Extension Package file was created by a different (newer) version of Adobe Extension Manager CC than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your MXP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Conclusion: The majority of MXP file opening issues are due to not having the correct Adobe Extension Manager CC version installed.

More Causes of Problems Opening MXPs

Even with the correct version of Adobe Extension Manager CC installed, you can still experience difficulties opening MXPs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening MXPs. Other contributing causes:

  • Invalid MXP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry MXP description
  • Defective install of a MXP program, such as Adobe Extension Manager CC
  • Your MXP file is corrupted (issues with your Adobe Extension Package file itself)
  • Your MXP is infected with malware
  • Hardware associated with MXP has outdated drivers
  • Windows cannot load your Adobe Extension Package file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
