PAT Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening PAT Files
Autodesk AutoCAD Isn't There
When you double-click your PAT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Autodesk AutoCAD missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your PAT because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens PAT files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Outdated Autodesk AutoCAD
Your AutoCAD Hatch Pattern File file is incompatible with Autodesk AutoCAD because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Autodesk AutoCAD if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your AutoCAD Hatch Pattern File file was created by a different (newer) version of Autodesk AutoCAD than what's installed.
Tip: Investigate your PAT file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: Not having the right Autodesk AutoCAD version on your computer can cause problems opening PAT files.
Other Causes of PAT File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Autodesk AutoCAD installed, you can still experience difficulties opening PATs. Other PAT opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid PAT file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the PAT file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Autodesk AutoCAD or other PAT-related program
- Something has caused file corruption of your PAT
- Your PAT is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your PAT file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the AutoCAD Hatch Pattern File file
